RCS Principal Ankrum Keynotes Annual Juneteenth Celebration
This past Saturday, Mr. Ankrum was honored to be the keynote speaker at the annual Juneteenth Celebration organized by The East End Voter Coalition.
African American Emancipation Day, Juneteenth, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862 to officially end slavery on January 1, 1863. However word of the emancipation was slow and slaves across the country continued in bondage unaware of their legal emancipation until June 19, 1865. On that day, Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, read aloud the Emancipation Proclamation and enforced the emancipation. (Pictured: Larry Williams, East End Voter Coalition and Raymond Ankrum, RCS)
