Riverhead Charter School Students Speak Up at the Capitol in Albany – February 2, 2016

Showing State Leaders the Strength and Importance of Public Education

The Annual Student Aid Alliance Advocacy Day, which took place in Albany NY on February 2nd 2016, was an opportunity for RCS students and their parents to make their voices heard and address some of the biggest challenges facing charter schools.

Participants discussed a wide variety of important topics, including fair access to facilities funding and funding parity for public charter school students. In addition, students had a chance to share stories about their educational experiences and explain how student aid can impact their future and transform their lives.

  • More than 1000 parents, students, educators, and supporters spoke about their schools and why it’s critical to have support and equity for them.
  • 120 schools from across New York state made the trip, many from hours away.
  • 90 legislative visits with elected officials.
  • Speakers included New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia, Senate Majority Leader Flanagan, Independent Democratic Conference Leader Klein, Senator Golden, Senator Diaz, Assemblyman Crespo, and Assembly Members Sepúlveda, Rodriguez, Blake and Gjonaj.
