Reading is taught in classes of students all working at
the same level. We emphasize cooperative learning and,
for students who require additional support, one-on-one
tutoring. Phonics, word-attack, comprehension, and
study skills are taught through a literature-based
approach.
The core reading program is a research-based program
that relies on prevention and early intervention to respond
to and solve any child's learning problems. This
program provides us with:
 | | Research-based curriculum materials
|
 | | Extensive professional development in |
| | proven instructional strategies
|
 | | Assessment and data-monitoring tools
|
 | | Classroom management techniques
|
 | | One-to-one tutoring for struggling students |

Active, hands-on explorations help students build
their understanding of the key scientific concepts
and big ideas that explain our world. Students
regularly work through topics in the areas of
physical science, earth and space science, life
science, and science and technology.
The science program that our school uses is
provided by Delta Education and consists of kits
and readers developed to provide children with an
age and developmentally appropriate
understanding of life science, earth science,
physical science, and science and technology.
Beginning in Kindergarten, students acquire a second language by learning conversation and culture, with the long-term goal of being able to communicate fluently in Spanish.

Our writer's workshop approach emphasizes the
stages through which writers advance with a piece of
writing: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and
proofreading, and publishing. We teach writing in all
subject areas. As students become more fluent
writers, they hone their skills in the mechanics of
spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
The education program that our schools uses for the
writing process is Step Up to Writing, which is a
research based writing program that emphasizes the
steps in the process of writing--planning (generation
and structuring of ideas), translating (putting ideas
into text), and revising (rewriting to improve).

The curriculum stresses computation and a full range of
mathematics including data collection and analysis,
probability and statistics, geometry, and pre-algebra.
To teach math we use the University of Chicago School
of Mathematics Everyday Mathematics, a research based
program proven to raise achievement levels. The
program is designed to provide: real-life problem solving,
balanced instruction (whole-group as well as small
group activities), multiple methods for basic skills
practice, opportunities to verbalize and discuss
mathematical thinking, opportunities for families to
participate in the learning progress, and the appropriate
use of technology.

Our project-based, program developed by Edison
Schools Inc. emphasizes the use of children's literature
in social studies instruction. Projects and activities are
often cross-curricular and are guided by a multicultural
perspective and respect for diversity. Character and
ethics lessons occurs several times a month through a
literature-based curriculum developed by the
Heartwood Institute.
